If you are producing more than 500kg per annum of hazardous IT equipment (equivalent to around 30 CRT monitors) then you will need to register with the environment agency. This is just to find out where this hazardous equipment produced by you is going to with a full paper trail. It is needed so that this hazardous equipment does get disposed of properly as part of the law.

The only way to destroy the data on your hard drives is to overwrite the data comprised in the platter of the hard drive using software such as Dban/ Blanco etc. Overwriting the data over the entire surface of the disc a multiple of times with random numbers and characters makes it impossible to recover the data. It basically encodes the data that cannot be broken and resets the file size to zero. We use the latest versions of this software on all hard drives during the computer equipment disposal process, which meets both US Military and UK Government Restricted standards. One other way we can get rid of the data on your hard drives is to crush them using our CESG approved hard drive crusher. This makes a hole big enough to pierce a hole in the platter of the hard drive making the data unreadable.
